Kenny rules out support for Dail ratification

RTE is reporting that Enda Kenny has said he will not support attempts to ratify parts of the Lisbon treaty in the Oireachtas. This is welcome. The Greens and soon-to-be former PDs should likewise state that they will stand by the peoples' decision and not go along with any attempt to ratify parts of the rejected treaty legislatively. This is another welcome step along the road to electability by FG.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has indicated his party would not support attempts to ratify parts of the Lisbon Treaty through the Dáil.

Mr Kenny said that the people had spoken and that he would not like to circumvent that by some other method.

However, he said these matters would have to be looked at by the Oireachtas Committee, which is to examine the reasons for and the implications of the rejection of the treaty.

But would enough FFers and Greens vote against ratification to make a difference? Is this just Kenny grabbing at straws as the FG blue tide ebbs?

Good news if its true but i'm sure no one here needs a lesson in taking what politicians say with a grain of salt.

Didn't Eamon Gilmore (he's the leader of the Labour Party) say he would not support a re run of the Lisbon Referendum and appear to backtrack in recent weeks?

    Lets be careful out there!

Of course if FG were in government they would be saying the opposite and Cowan would be calling for Kenny to respect the people's decision.

Would you ever for once in your life decide what party you support, you’re jumping around the parties here like a nervy kangaroo.
Anyway who cares what Enda would support, who asked him to support anything, who needs him to support anything.

What effect on the electoral prospects of FF would a partial Dail ratification of Lisbon have? Would FF be able to get FF to vote en-bloc or would it allow those who disagree to abstain but not vote against it?

KING KANE, MERIWEATHER, HBAP et al, RUN FOR THE FRICKING HILLS..... FT is on his way to your side!!!! Get onto Kenny right now. This could be the end of Fine Gael if he starts to support you!!! Change your name, your address, your Ard Fheis venue, everything.

oh yeh, sorry - the actual point. Yes indeed a very welcome statement from Enda Kenny. Respecting democracy and all that - especially given that democracy rarely respects FG
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

It's preferable to the blind loyalty verging on religious fanatacism or football hooliganism displayed by 'loyal' deluded FF supporters such as yourself.

I don't normally agree with FT, but his support for this course of action by EK is consistent with FT's opposition to Lisbon.
