European Union – in or out?

Out of interest, how many p.ie users would like to see Eire completely withdraw from the European Union? Explain your answer. What would the benefits be? What would be the pitfalls? Intelligent answers please.

It would be great if a Mod could create a poll!

good and fair question- I would be opposed to withdrawal but am basically happy with how it is now and think it very important to maintain that influence (actually practical, legal influence rather than "sure aren't we europeans and give us some money" influence we have been told we hold to date

I'm against leaving the EU as things stand, because although a free-trade agreement might be possible with the EU from outside, existing member states would be making decisions on what can be imported into the EU and quality control of imports etc. that would still affect us.

Do you mean how things stand presently, viz, without Lisbon? Just out of interest?

Ps, I’m not posting here after this because I want to hear from others on this one so last word from me!

Out. And rejoin EFTA which is the only European union we should want a place in.

Ireland to remain in the EU. Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, Europe has an opportunity that has never existed before to secure its diverse culture, traditions and civilization on long lasting and stable political foundations. I am also in favour of Ireland ratifying the Lisbon Treaty the purpose of which was to make the EU work better and be more democratic.

If Ireland prevents the EU from improving its institutions at this critical juncture it should negotiate whatever opt-outs are necessary and allow the others move forward.

In, but in a real substantive democracy not the current EU democracy in name only.

If the EU continue to force their pro-corporate and neo-liberal agenda upon the Irish people such as privatisation of water supply then I would urge Ireland to consider withdrawal.
