European group want to take away our olympic team.

So with the excellent closing of the Chinese olympic games, one would have the hope and joy to experience the 2012 games in London with even more joy and hope as these next ones are at our own doorstep.


Yep for just a few euros a ryan air flight will get you to london for the 2012 olympic games to watch the Irish team battle it out for a erm dare I say Gold, Silver or Broze medal?


So we didnt do too well at the games but at least we attended and represented our small island. But was this the last time we can and could?


Well it certainly will be if an elete group of pro europeans get their way!


The story which can be found in a British newspaper as usual goes unreported in the pro european Irish press. Below are some extracts from the story.


A group funded by the European Commission wants to see Team GB replaced with a single European Olympic squad.
Clearly this would mean all EU states would follow suit!


The controversial plans have been drawn up by the Young European Federalists, a 35,000-strong organisation that has received hundreds of thousands of pounds in grants from the EC.The Brussels-based organisation argues that a single European team would lead the medals table and help people to feel more like European citizens.It says the move would also help to “combat nationalism that is always very fast in spreading on these sporting occasions”.

Of course I'm Irish first. What a silly little question to ask. It's just sport. For example look at the Lions, that doesn't make us part of the United Kingdom. We're part of that team as an equal partner.

And with regards to self-determination that has nothing to do with this thread, but as a democrat I am in full support of self-determination.

Complete nonsense of a story, published in a newspaper that leans very much to the anti EU side of any European debate. Britain did very well at the games. This paper is just cynically using the pride that its readers would feel in that success to have a rant at the EU.

Straight bananas, medals given to the Elysee Palace, Queen taken off passports, etc, etc, etc

I searched and searched but I couldn't find any mention of this on the JEF (Young European Federalists) website. I did another search and came up with a raft of articles condemning the 'open letter' but no link to the open letter itself.
