Lisbon II referendum in Autumn 2009 - Sunday Tribune

Shane Coleman in an opinion column in the Sunday Tribune states categorically, in an article on Brian Cowen, that there WILL be a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, and that it will be held in Autumn 2009.

    Thoughts, folks?

(Cue Eurosceptic rants, FT referring to Vichy and 'elites', etc.)

Given that FT was in fact completely and utterly correct in his prediction that Lisbon would be defeated, and you were completely and utterly incorrect, you are treading on shaky ground.

Shane had a bit of a slow week (again) and was backed up against a deadline (again).

Looks like speculation to me. From the article, I can't see any reason to believe a second Lisbon referendum would be held in Autumn 2009 rather than at any other time. It is August, not much happening politically speaking (at least domestically)...

Doubt it. In order to be able to successfully sell it, there would have to be a very substantial declaration at the next Council of Ministers meeting. If that were to happen ........ maybe.

That's what needs to happen, which finally seems to be dawning on the Government.

The fact that nobody knew the consequences of a No vote the last time was one of the reasons why we got a No vote. There should be no ambiguity next time out.

Personally, I like Mary O'Rourke's idea that parts of the Lisbon Treaty are ratified by the Dail and other parts are put to Referendum at some stage.

And such a strategy would guarantee that no EU Treaty would ever be passed again by the Irish people.
