Affiliation to German Battlegroup - Kite being flown

Read this very worrying article in the pheonix today. Hopefully the pheonix are wrong but if there is any truth to this it is extremely worrying as such amove would bring us closer to NATO and would be a deep gash in the death by a thousand cuts of our neutrality. There needs to be more public pressure to preserve what we have and bring back a full neutrality position. The rejection of lisbon is the perfect opportunity to start a debate on withdrawing from battlegroups/PfP etc.

Its been doing the rounds for a few weeks now - Willie O'Dea has held exploratory talks with the Krauts on this already IIRC.

Undecided if its a good idea or not myself but I think on balance we should stay the way we are - but I think the current Battlegroups only have a limited lifespan anyway so it might be the case that like it or lump it we hace to choose new partners one way or the other.

Maybe if they equip us with a regiment of Panzers it would be a nice little sweetner - esp if they foot the Bill!

The Germans have a neutrality clause for offensive actions as well......
If we're going to be in another battlegroup with anybody, it's gotta be the Scandanavians or the Germanic countries (Germany/Austria).

There is no question of withdrawing from battlegroups.

Nothing spectacular here, as many of the most senior officers in the Army have being doing Command and Staff courses with NATO countries, for decades. It is a virtual requirement for promotion to the senior ranks. So of course the professional advice that the government are receiving is for closer ties with NATO.

You think we need the irish in the euro-army?
Don't think so, so do as you wish.
Still, even as the investor consensus ravages the euro, it's worth remembering that the same herd instinct not long ago was pronouncing last rites for the dollar. Last year, as China's central bank chief called for a new global currency and Russian central bankers dumped greenbacks to buy euros, many saw the dollar's decline as inevitable. Now, the dollar is riding high, and the euro looks bedraggled.
