Brussels proposes ban on seal cruelty

    From today's euobserver.com

The European Commission on Wednesday (23 July) proposed a ban on seal products obtained by inhumane methods from entering or being produced within the European Union.

"Seal products coming from countries that practice cruel hunting methods must not be allowed to enter the EU," said environment commissioner Stavros Dimas unveiling the proposal, which also covers sealing within the EU. "The EU is committed to upholding high standards of animal welfare."
Once again, the EU is seen to be the organisation making the running on animal welfare. In spite of threats of retaliatory action by the Canadian government, the EU has placed animal welfare ahead of the narrow commercial interests and unacceptable practices of the Canadian hunting industry.

Well done for once to the Brussels boys. Seal hunting is barbaric and should be eliminated.

Now if the Irish government clamped down on puppy farming that would be another step for animal welfare but I won't hold my breath.

There is already a thread on this but sure its no harm to raise the issue again.

Puppy farms are disgusting and I cant believe they havennt been made illegal yet. But then again we are still clinging to the legality of bloodsports and our fur farming trade, not to mention the resistance against the ban on battery farming. The government wont do anything about it because animals cant vote and they will just dismiss animal rights lobbists as crazy lefties. Lisbon I think also had a clause recognising that animals were sentient beings.

Lobster fishing is very cruel too. Still, it's good with mayonnaise.

It is horrible but the cooking process is worse. It is also a very dangerous occupation with many being killed each year in the pursuit of lobsters.
