EU 1bn to African farmers correct path?

Interesting story today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7513562.stm

It seems the EU is to alot 1 billion of unspent farm subsidies to famers in Africa. 8 countries have queried the legality of this.

In my personal opinion the EU is being cavalier with EU funds. A billion Euro is no joke and the EU are the last people who should be charged with distribution of such funds given their record to date.

Borosso says:
Without European help, United Nations goals to halve world poverty might fail, and tensions between countries in Africa over resources might intensify, he said.
Which begs the question, why is it the EUs job to pick up the slack when OPEC countries are raking in cash with record oil prices, Russia is flush and China has more money than it can spend?

Re: EU 1bn to African farmers correct path?

Initially I wondered why could the funds not be allocated to our fishermen as a matter of urgency. Then on reconsideration most likely the fishermen would purchase more oil so that they could fish off African waters, and thereby cause more hardship to African fishermen.

All in all not a bad idea, but I feel that reducing the importation of arms into Africa may be more effective in reducing regional tensions.

EU 1bn to African farmers correct path?
NO it is not!

My reasons have already been stated in "Its the third worlds fault they are poor" Thread.

As a 1/300,000,000 owner of that money I resent it being spent in such a fashion.
