United Kingdom formally ratifies Lisbon Treaty

The United Kingdom this week completed the process of ratifying the Lisbon Reform Treaty. Under international treaty rules, the United Kingdom passes and ratifies treaties in a step by step process, the final step of which has now been completed, meaning the United Kingdom has now fully ratified the Treaty.

    The steps are:

    1. The signing of the Treaty by the Prime Minister in the name of the Queen.
    2. The approval of the House of Commons.
    3. The approval of the House of Lords.
    4. The receipt of the Royal Assent.
    5. The formal placing of a copy of the treaty signed by the Queen in the Italian Republic's archives.

The fifth of the five steps was completed this week, finishing the process. Earlier this week the Polish president withdrew his opposition to the treaty and agreed to sign it into law in Poland.

Why Italy? I could understand Lisbon, Brussels or London. Is it going back to the Treaty of Rome?

I think it's a requirement of any international treaty, not just EU ones.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

    Yup.

The Treaties of Rome established a series of European Communities such as the European Economic Community, the European Atomic Energy Community, etc. (People use 'treaty' - singular - to refer to any one of the treaties).

As the foundation document of the current EU was originally lodged in the Italian state archives, all Instruments of ratification for the member states for all EC, Euratom and EU treaties are lodged there, to keep them all together as a set.

    Not unexpected.
Well, it's their country, they can ratify what they want.
Just as we can, and did, say No.

    On what grounds? Low turn-out as the Nice Treat was re-run? Nice I; 35% turn-out. Nice II; 48% yurn-out. Lisbon; 53% turn-out.
Or is it that you can't accept the word No?
