Sarkozy: plans to control French state television

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008...nce.television

Looks like the French government have a lot in common with our own.

This has reopened the festering row over the president's influence over the media and closeness to his press and TV baron friends who are willing to lean on, censor or even sack journalists who displease him.

For reference, I'll add this bit of french history:
The law "must be the same for all, whether it protects or punishes. All citizens, being equal in its eyes, shall be equally eligible to all high offices, public positions and employments, according to their ability, and without other distinction than that of their virtues and talents." - The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789.

Europe stinks these days, something is rotten. It's like a Marxist state developing right in front of us.

It shows that Europe is moving away from democracy.

Very Worrying. Are we headed the way of Russia? Along with all the free rein the Lisbon treaty would grant these beaurocrats, any sort of hindrance to free speech would be very dangerous. Also, did anyone hear murmurs about possible changes to the 50/50 time rule for broadcasters Yes/No coverage?

I wonder will eurocritical people like me be referred to outside the EU as "dissidents" in the years ahead?

Perhaps you should write a few plays, hold a shamrock revolution, and then you could be elected as President of a Free Federal Republic of Ireland

    Sarkozy does a Berlusconi.
(Mind you, at least he had the good grace to buy the channels he sits on.)

Did I misread today's IT; Sarkozy declaring "I am France"?? Or just some harking back to DeGaulle's time?

I think it was Le Monde having a dig at him. I think his days are numbered. His polling numbers are heading south. His party was thrashed in the local elections. He is a hyperactive dictator.
