Sinn Fein: Europussies who'd back Turkish EU membership?

Sinn Fein pose as being tough on Europe. But the party urged unfettered access to Ireland's Labour market for EU citizens from Bulgaria and Romania. The current coalition stopped workers from those countries from coming here. The logic of Sinn Fein's position is that the party would support EU enlargement encompassing 100 million Turks, who would be free to live and work in Ireland. Strip away the spin and Sinn Fein are Europussies.

Make that 72 million or so Sunni muslims. Now you hardly expect the far left to complain about immigration from anywhere by anyone.

It is FF and FG stated policy to support the accession of Turkey.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I never heard SF speak on the matter.

If any forseeable Irish govt support Turkish accession.

The most effective way to demonstrate your opposition to Turkish accession to to vote NO to Lisbon.

I'm basically saying 'Don't be Turkey, vote No to Lisbon.

Sinn Fein fully supports Turkish accession, in the teeth of opposition from international liberation movements. The party's Francie Brolly MLA showed the kneecappers' hand when he fobbed off brave Kurdish rebels with this blandishment:
"I and my party, Sinn Féin, will support you in any way we can. I have read some comment from your community on Turkey’s application for membership of the European Union. I understand that some of you may see it as an attempt by the Turkish administration to get itself a cloak of respectability, which it does not merit, considering its treatment of the Kurdish people. Our experience was that Britain’s membership of the EU was useful to us. It was an important forum to which our people could take our grievances against the British, causing them considerable embarrassment, and thus it was a powerful launching pad and base for our publicity campaign in mainland Europe. You should prepare for the possibility of Turkish membership, ready to use it fully to your advantage."

I wouldn't be over-anxious to bestow victim status on all Kurds. As the Armenians will attest the Kurds were willing participants in the WW1 genocides. In Europe they have shown themselves to be just as muslim and just as unlikely to assimilate as Turks, Iraqis or indeed any other muslims.

Well, what is their position then? He gave a quote from Brolly (if accurate).

I don't think 100 million, bitterly poor Turks should be admitted as members to the EU. It currently has an Islamist government and has a notorious record for torture and genocide. Enlargement has to stop somewhere...I would have it stop and Greece, the Ukraine or Belarus and Moldova. That's it.

Zyklon B: You rather miss the point about Turkey. The torture in Turkey over the years, and indeed the Armenian genocide, have been committed by the pro-Western secularists. The Islamists in Turkey who are currently in power are significantly more friendly (albeit still not very) towards minorities (Kurds, Armenians) and significantly more relaxed in terms of press censorship and free speech than the pro-Western secularists ever were.
