Council of Europe calls for abortion rights
    Tuesday, 18 March 2008 17:57

The Council of Europe has called on Ireland to decriminalise abortion.

The Council's Committee on Equal Opportunities says all member states should guarantee women the right to abortion.

The report calls for abortion be decriminalised, saying a ban does not reduce the number of abortions but can lead to more dangerous and clandestine procedures.

That's all we need before a referendum.
If engineers were wrong as often as economists, would anyone fly aeroplanes?

I'm right in thinking the council of europe has no connection to the EU?

You are right. But the European Court of Human Rights belongs to the CoE. If the ECHR rules that the failure to legalise abortion is a breach of the Convention of Human Rights, we could be in all sorts of trouble

That's a very political matter to get involved in and to 'recommend' to states isn't it? It's hardly a humanitarian issue like the Death Penalty where arguably there are clear human rights involved. Does the council tend to do this kind of stuff?
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

Oh Christ. That is all we need before a referendum.

    1. The Council of Europe's opinion on the matter is worthless and will be ignored.

    2. But many people don't understand the different between the Council of Europe and the European Union, or indeed the Council of Europe and the European Council. Some religious extremists have already been pushing the 'Lisbon will introduce abortion' bullsh*t. The last thing the moderates on either side of the Lisbon divide want is to have more red herrings about 'Europe = abortion' nonsense.

Thanks to those plonkers in the Council of Europe, that is what we are likely to have. *sigh*

I'll take their opinion with salt but I'll take it either way.

Though in fairness isn't that the people's fault for being uninformed and.. well, basically stupid? I blame noone but ourselves..
