EU to finger-print travellers

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/11/AR2008021102786.html?hpid=topnews

The EU is now going to finger-print every non-EU citizen entering the union, and the details will be shared amongst member states. Personally I welcome the move, what are other people's opinions? I'm sure many just don't care, but still...

I welcome it too. It will act to cut down on the asylum shoppers.

Is Ireland considered non-eu seeing that we aren't a part of the common travel zone?

I believe so since such a scheme could only be feasible and be carried out within the context of the Schengen zone.

Therefore, it seems Irish and UK citizens would need to be fingerprinted.

What will be done with the fingerprints? What kind of security will be on the database?

Can someone download the database, save it to a CD, and lose it in the post?

Well, were we to be part of the Schengen-zone these measures wouldn't affect us at all, only the baddies we'd like to keep out, or in.

Only with a hell of a lot of effort! You could presumably check any set of fingerprints against the database, though. Depends on exactly the access granted to the database.

They better make sure that the finger printing equipment is nailed down.

That gear would fetch a decent price at a fair in Ballinasloe.
