If we had control over interest rates any normal government would have increased them at the start of the housing boom and slowed down price increases to a more manageable and value reflective level.
If we had control of the exchange rate we could now reduce the value of our currency somewhat in order to make exports to the US and England more completive relieving pressure on already stressed out exporters. But no we gave this controls over to the ECB.
Does anyone think that the ECB even consider the Irish economy when working out interest rate and exchange rate levels?
