Can't say I'm unduly patriotic. I have more of an affinity with my local community and its trials and tribulations than I do with the Irish nation state. I suppose if the state were in crises many people would rise up to save it. However, if the state were up for sale to the highest bidder, and an effective marketing campaign introduced, I suspect many people would take the money and run. So much for the soul of the nation.

I think it depends on what one means by patriotic. Patriotic to the wellbeing of one's polity? Or a nationalistic patriotism of the 'imagined community'?
