    Schengen: Police Pursuit

I've put this on here because the Schengen police cooperaton arrangement was mentioned in the build up of the story.

The Dup have called for the Garda to be allowed to 'hot pursue' criminals into NI and Psni vice-versa.

If this went ahead, do you think it would be under a "new" deal or would we see it happening through the opting into a little bit more of Schengen?

Interesting. What does Sinn Fein have to say about it?

It would possibly be a very good idea, but the clincher would be - could a PSNI make an arrest in the Republic and vice versa? I would think that if they knew they were going across the "border" they would then get backup for arrest by the local force.

I think that would be the soundest approach.
There's also the 'local acceptability' aspect.

    its called the prum treaty.
Agreed by Germany, Spain, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, and Belgium in 2005
They then tried to expanded early this year but surprise surprise the UK blocked it.
Ireland was also reluctant to join it as a result of issues with cross boarder policing and tensions it may cause.

I do remember calling my MEP and others in relation to this

I have also wondered: Ireland didn't want to join because of tensions within Northern Ireland and the North of Ireland.
The UK didn't want to join it. well because they are the United (NO) Kingdom
However in theory we could join it with out the UK and it would have zero effect of us.
We couldn't pursue over the boarder and neither could the PSNI so unless some French officer was in involved in a hot pursuit over the channel to Ireland it would have zero effect on us.

Interesting to see Ian Paisley supporting it.
I think we could adopt it even if we do it as a separate deal to the prum treaty
The boarder should not act as some old US state line or that of the USA and Mexico

PS that cartoon is brilliant I hope pressure is put on the government when the campaign kicks off properly. To opt in to all measures as allow us have a vote on THE EU TREATY

PSS Prum is a german word as is meant to have a .. over the u

Don't see why it would be a problem, as long as provision was made for local representation and consultation.

Joining Schengen would mean that we would have to police the border with the North.

If you want to reerect border crossings within Ireland then support joining Schengen.

We should say "Yes" to the DUP proposal provided they agree to NI joining the Schengen zone!

You mean, we'd have to act like we really were independent and police our international border? Gosh - wasn't the whole point of the War of Independence that we can just spend our time pretending to be independent?
