    EU new roaming charges

The new EU enforced maximum mobile roaming charges started today and will only fall over the next 3 years. When in another EU country, with your home mobile, the maximum for making a call will be (excl vat) 49c per min and for receiving (excl vat) 24c. These are the maximum charges that operators are allowed to charge so it may be worthwhile checking out different phone operators to see if they have even better deals. In Belfast here, Orange are bang on the button and are not moving any further than the new law requires. When abroad, 38p to call, 19p to receive a call. That's some difference from my previous experience of £1.20 and 60p respectively. It will be interesting to see if the mobile companies hike up their domestic call charges to compensate.

The 3 network say they are the lowest in Ireland at 39c to make and 19c to recieve calls/per minute. The UK, Austria and Italy are treated the same as if you were at home in Ireland.
