So, are you?
I am Irish and then I'd be listed as European, but would you be proud to be called a European as well as the country you come from?

Not particularly, but then I'm not particularly proud to be Irish either. It's not that I'm ashamed of either of those things, but I don't see the point in being "proud" of something which I had no control over.
I'm proud of some things I've done myself over the years, and embarrassed about plenty of others (usually drunk). But at least there's a reason for me to feel that I should have sort of personal "buy-in" to those. But if some scientist in Trinity wins a Nobel prize, or the Irish football team wins a match, or if Colm Toibin wins the Booker Prize, it's nothing to do with me, so I'm not going to be proud about those. By the same token, I'm not going to be ashamed about the nastier aspects of Irish history, like the stories of institutional abuse, or the clerical dominance, because I had nothing to do with them.
Is there anything particularly special about being Irish or being European that I should be proud about?

Ugly word... Continentality? Continence?supranationality
I, for one, am proud of the Irish contribution to Europe, and the European Acheivement. So, I guess, I am proud to be a European, prouder than I am to be Irish.

Is it just me, or do you have an incredible propensity to being shocked?
I recognise that I'm from Europe, but there is little that makes me feels European (except maybe for anti-Americanism - is that really the only uniting feature?). There is nothing by way of nation-building, and only pathetic attempts at building a European/EU identity, so no, I don't feel all that European. Not ashamed of it as such, just not all that pushed...
Heavy words are so lightly thrown.
I feel European every time I look at our beautiful coinage.
I also feel Irish when I'm looking at the obverse sides of our beautiful coinage.
Nothing will motivate the lazy / apathetic / Americanised / west-British types to embrace their culture and the Irish language.
It's easy to shock me. Just as well I don't wear my monocle too often! Is it just me, or do you have an incredible propensity to being shocked?![]()
