A member of Parti Socialiste joked to me that Sarko is like Pétain. He doesn't like the Germans but is over awed by them, regards them as winners so hitches up with them.

I thought the only benefit was if you had one you didn't have to display a seperate badge showing what country you were from when you drove in the rest of the EU. Certainly most cars in the UK don't have them - is it an Irish law?

The idea for an EU symbol on the number plates was to get rid of the various differences in size of nationality plates used across Europe, within the EU that is.

Nationality plates while still acceptable all over Europe, are frowned on by most police forces across Europe. They expect " Uniformity " with all number plates now. In the UK the number plates with the EU flag and Nationality plate combined is being grudgingly accepted and become more acceptable. The experience of being stopped by police in France and told that the old nationality plate is not allowed pushes the argument forward.

Just a little bit off the subject here.

In 1987 when the new numbering system came into operation here in Ireland it caused some confusion for the british Police & HM Customs. A lot of trucks entering and leaving the UK with Dublin registration were not stopped or searched during the first month or so of the new issue. IE., 87 D 1234. They all thought that they were DIPLOMATIC vehicles!

They will only stop when they percieve they have every human being in 'europe' as bland as a brick in an utterly pointless, irrelevant wall.

Unless you, dear reader, decide otherwise
