How many of you would actually want a United States of Europe?

Texans are part of a Federal USA and I dare you to tell them that their "nationhood" has been diminished in any way?

Their culture and sense of nationhood goes back how far? 400 years perhaps max?
Plus the US is a nation which strives for the best for all it's states. You can be sure who would be the powerhouses in the USE if it ever manifested.

Hard to know without first seeing the blueprints for such a system as USE it might work if the bureaucracy was cut and elections were held. A system based on the US model would get my vote a system on its current course would not work and hence not get my vote. The current system favors the big two and shoves the smaller countries aside with gay abandon.

I would prefer to see an United States of Europe.

I would prefer one ministry of finance and social services based on the German model.

I want to see an European ministry of research and development with a minimum spend of 3% of GDP of Europe.

I want to see all ministers and people in charge of each European Union department being directly elected to the European Union parliament as MEPs and European government being choosen from those directly elected representatives.

People such as Peter Madelson should never even have been allowed into the European beaurocracy, let alone appointed to a senior position.

I would like to see this, especially a common science and research department. I feel CERN and ESA should also come under direct EU governance. I'd love to see Ireland have a space centre.

Why would we be back to a sterling backed punt? We're in the Euro for good.

There won't be a big bang creation of a United States of Europe like the Declaration of independence. It'll be a drip, drip pooling of sovereignty by the member states over many decades.

My preference is for an eventual federation of European states cooperating on issues of mutual importance, with a common defence and foreign policy, a shared currency with power concentrated with the democratically elected European parliament.

Can we stop now that someone has a sensible answer?
