Recently I have become very euro-sceptic when I realised the decline in Irish national soverignity on important economic and political issues. Is it time for Ireland to leave the EU. I will admit that there are pros and cons to such a drastic move. The negative factor would be leaving the Euro and the huge transition costs that this would involve in going back to the punt. However, there are plus points to be made if Ireland was to leave the European Union.
- Ireland would be able to decide its own taxation policy that would be completely independent of the socialist beaureacrats in Brussels.
- Ireland would be able to deceide how many immigrants would be allowed to enter Ireland each year. We would be able to abolish the open door policy that exists at the moment towards eastern european Immigrants. I personally think that immigration should be capped at between 35,000-40,000 immigrants each year.
- We would still be able to keep abortion ilegal in Ireland and not have liberal ideologues in the European Court of Justice, forcing the government to liberalise our abortion laws.
- We would be able to take a tougher stance on trade unions as at the moment EU directives prevent the government taking a tough stance on trade unions.
- No more unnecessary business regulation from Brussels, already Brussels imposes unnecssary red tape on Irish businesses.
- We would be able to decide our own environmental policies and not be dictated to by left wing ideologues.
- Ireland would be able to align itself more politically and economically with the USA, China and the emerging tiger economies in the far east. Lets face reality in Western Europe Ireland is the most americanised economy.
All in all such a move woule encourage Ireland to become more economically liberal and Ireland would be able to draft immigration laws that would p[revent Ireland from becoming a haven for hate-mongering preachers that we see in the UK and France on a regular occurance.
