Constituency Commission review of Euro constituencies

As well as reviewing the Dail constituencies the Constituency Commission are also reviewing the European constituencies. They have to report by October. Complicating the review is that they have only 12 rather than 13 seats to allocate this time. This seems set up for 3 4 seaters to me with a BMW, East and South constituency in line with the Regional Assemblies.

A Border Midlands and West constituency is pretty self explanatory. An East constituency would include Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. And a South constituency with Munster and the remainder of Leinster (Carlow/Kilkenny/Wexford).

    Anyone got any better ideas?

    More sensibly.

South - Munster + Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford
Greater Dublin - Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Meath
    North - Eveything else

    All constituencies as 4-seaters.

They have to present their final report to the Oireachtas on a date that escapes me at the moment in October.

I could go for a national 12 seater, or even two 6 seaters (Dublin and Leinster+Munster and Connacht Ulster)...I'm getting blisters just thinking about it!

Talk to the Ulster Assembly about joing the two parts of the island for the purposes of EU elections.

A national 12 seater would be great craic alright but i'd hate to have to canvass it.

Yeah, as has been said (sort of)
4 x Dublin and bits around it
4 x Rest of Ireland (north)
4 x Rest of Ireland (south)

The only thing is, the "north" bit would be very big because of the thinner population in these parts. It would probably extend south of Dublin.

I don't think the "BMW" idea is a runner because the population wouldn't be balanced.

They have to present no later than six months from their establishment. They were established on 26th April, so they have to report before the 26th October.

While there is some merit in the single state wide 12 seater, they are restricted by legislation to 3, 4 or five seats.

They are also reporting on the Leinster House constituencies btw.
