    Next EU Commissioner

Ok next commission is not due till 2009, but if there is a change in government who would get it, or would charlie be reappointed. I reckon the two hot favs would have to be Bertie and Mary Harney, and if labour are part of the government I reckon you could see Dick Spring in the running.

If FG and Labour get in, a good candidate would have a strong shot at a senior position. My choice would be Alan Dukes.

As FF-PD are statistically unlikely to enter govt, given the loss of seats facing FF (they got an unprecedented and unlikely to be possible to be repeated bonus last time so even if they got the same percentage as last time - and they are way off that - they would lose up to 7-8 seats, making FF-PD too small to form a government) a different coalition is a certainty.

If the rainbow (FG-Lab-GN), and they have a majority, the most likely candidates are Ruairi Quinn and Michael Noonan. If they don't, they will go outside the Dáil. Dick Spring or Alan Dukes are possibilities.

If there is a change of Government?

Alan Dukes in my mind would be the most qualified and competent.
Other than that.. I don't know, some prominent member of Young Fine Gael who has done immense work for the party, the people of Kildare and humanity generally.. Someone like say a former chair of Kildare YFG or something.

In labour, yeah Dick Spring.. or Peter Cassels?

If Fianna Fail are returned then I could see McCreevy getting a 2nd term or possibly Ahern as a sort of golden handshake from Cowen.

If the Rainbow is in power then it would be quite interesting, from the Fine Gael side John Bruton would have to be the favourite, if he was appointed then he could expect to get one of the higher portfolios possibly even the Presidency given his work in Washington & his position as one of the big hitters in the EPP family. Other possibilities would be Alan Dukes, Gay Mitchell or maybe Nora Owen but it's hard to see past Bruton

If it's a Labour appointee then both Dick Spring & Ruairi Quinn would have a decent chance, Quinn could get quite a good monetary portfolio.

Dukes is a waste of space and always has been. Harney wouldn't be a bad choice, in that at least it would remove her from selling off our health system to her pals.
I'd like to see it go to Spring to be honest.

Dukes a waste of space? What about the Tallaght strategy or being the first politician to stand up to the Church vis-a-vis divorce, contraception etc.

Tallaght Strategy - rubber stamping your opposition's policies for them. Great work there, I mean, it didn't leave Fine Gael without a purpose or an electorate at all.
As for the rest, care to provide evidence that he was the first to 'stand up' to the Church?

Because all senior cabinet ministers are always brilliantly talented, of course.
