Don't mind her, she is only a Europhobe.

It only seems like a few weeks, that people were saying that such a thing will never happen.

If Greece is kicked out, they will point at this state and say how can you honestly kick us out and leave in Ireland, never mind Spain or Italy.

Merkel is laying down a framework, for a damage limitation strategy - a retrenchment of the Euro and in effect the EU.

Maybe so but that is vastly different for the one economic government proposed by the euroloonies in Paris and Berlin where is micromanagement and a one size fits all approach.

I would suggest leaving the Euro. Other than that we'll just have to batten down the hatches.

I know you would suggest leaving the Euro.. but are you agreeing with me then, that the choices are

    1. Leave the Euro

    or

    2. Prepare for fiscal Union

Like I said, my difficulty is the amount of people who don't understand that its 1 or 2, but you can't have both

That is part of Monetary union.

I do not believe that Fiscal union will do this country any good.

You can have both. Whether you want to or not is a different story.

How can you have both ?

You cannot get away long term with states using internal fiscal policy to try to undermine other states competitive advantages.. eventually you would create a race to the bottom

And for example, as one German commentator stated last week, quite rightly too, why should a German worker toil until they are 67, to bail out a Greek public service workers pension, when they retire at 54 ? (Or an Irish Gardai or soldier who retires at 50 !!!)

They shouldn't. But that has nothing to do with the 16 states using the Euro. There is a no bailout clause so the rest of the EU should not bail out Greece or anyone else. I fail to see what the above dilemma has to do with the 16 using the Euro.

That is rather a clumsy post.
Why or even how could you have leave the Euro AND prepare for a fiscal union?
That would make no sense at all.

BTW - it is number of people not amount of people.

We can no longer pretend that the EU is perfect, squeaky clean, progressive, etc. --it's just not that simple, nothing in life is. The EU President and other top officials/high representatives (or whatever title makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside) earn more than Obama. Baroness Ashton makes more money that any other female politician on the planet --but what does she do? Where did she come from? Also the EU is undemocratic, full stop. We do not vote to elect the officials who have the power --and electing MEP's who then have to wait in the parliament until ten at night in the vague hope that they *might* get 60 seconds to speak.... it's a show-parliament. When it comes to a referendum, that is now a joke, and people are waking up to that --the Swiss had a referendum FIVE times, and kept saying no! A sixth time? A tenth time? When does no mean no? But apparently yes means yes from the get go. In fairness the EU is no where near as severe as the Former Soviet Union, but it does use many of the same 'tricks' or undemocratic methods. 'Rule by councils' and a system that seeks to absorb countries in such a way that the nation-state withers away... all true of the EU and, deep down, we know it. We have had the age of industry, now welcome to the age of austerity (our remaining life times). I hope YOU will feel it was worth it.
