    German competitiveness scores again.

Huge demand for German-built submarines and tanks has seen Germany capture 11 per cent of the global arms market, according to the report.

As Derek Scally notes in his useful report, despite its economic problems, Greece remains the largest importer of major conventional weapons in Europe.

So a German bailout may lead to the same money coming back into Germany via arms sales. Much like the Masstrict referendum bribe *cough* structural funds had to be spent on contracts with European firms.

    What goes around....

Here is a more general point made my SIPRI as quoted by Derek Scally -

Of particular note were jumps in arms imports by Indonesia (84 per cent), Singapore (146 per cent) and Malaysia (722 per cent) compared to the previous period of study.

The report’s authors suggested that these countries were involved in a regional arms race to replace their old weapons in light of growing Chinese military might.

It is happening in South America to. It should help the USA payback some of it's debt, selling all these guns.

What does Greece need with such a massive conventional army and all these weapons? I bet it is a relic of it's pro-communist days. Socialists love big armies, just ask Hugo. It is part of Nato which means it's defense is covered. It should cull some of it's armed forces to reduce expenditure.

Germany's basically forcing Greece to make all these military purchases, in exchange for financial assistance that may not even come.. What's more outrageous is that Germany still owes Greece some several hundred billions of euros in outstanding war damages, even after the alleged assitance via the eurozone. Mitteleuropa, here we come, right back where we started from...

Well the Stockholm based SIPRI Institute might look in their own backyard as peace loving Sweden is about 10th in the world table with export sales of €1.9 billion in 2009

Germany exports high value military technology which accounts for most of its market share. In the scale of destructive power and in terms of weapons sold it is probably far behind even India and Pakistan, let alone China.

    Example:

Germany supplies 1 Eurofighter, cost: €63 million

China supplies 1.630.000 Kalishnikovs: €63 million

Who is the bigger arms supplier?

We have been through this argument before, in real terms the table of who supplies arms is always calculated by using the easiest obtainable data - declared money involved. In fact in terms of money, Russia and China often stand accused of massive undeclared arms deals. So even using the financial benchmark (as opposed to tonnage or destructive capability) the table is still grossly inacruate.

As nations are tightening up their armed forces to try and follow a more Western NATO standard of professionalism and training, so the equipment demands from said forces rise. Europe will continue to meet these demands, supplying better equipment for smaller armies. Though it would not be inacruate to claim that Europe was a leading arms manufacturer globally, it would still leave Europe, in terms of being a supplier, far behind Russia and China. Europe being the font of weapons that cause world misery and destruction would only be true of 3rd world kleptocracys could afford sophisticated high cost European arms.

The Leopard 2 is probably the best MBT in the world.
The H&K G36 is used in scores of countries (look at how many nations have imported the British SA80).
Bottom line-if you forget the emotionality around arms & weaponry-is that German industry produces excellent products.
