The last I heard the Turks themselves didn't want in. Most urban, educated Turks are very secular and happy where they are. Rural peasants are more religious and more likely to emigrate. But in the end of the day it doesn't matter what we, or the Turks think, it's the German industrialists looking for new markets who'll call the shots. Even their TUV people, the ones who conducted car NCT tests check all Turkish vehicles these days. Turks are decent people, most of them honest and respectful, well groomed and polite. Why on Earth would they want to join the EU?

To me the expansion of the EU has nothing to do with geography and everything to do with promoting social egalitarian peaceful societies. If countries can adapt to fit the model it shouldn't matter what continent they're on. I think Turkey needs more time for that adaptation.

Why not just leave them alone, to get on with their own business?

If we believe in the EU model it makes sense to see it spread for the good of all. But only if they want to join of course.

This Turkey stuff comes up more often than Christmas. The only surprising thing about the poll is that the % rejecting is comparatively small.

What's all this evangelism in aid of? You'd be a lot better of, and make a greater difference on the scheme of things if you checked in on an elderly neighbour down the road or got involved in some socail organisation in your locality than wasting time think of grandiose, global themes like the good of the Turkish people. Let them get on with their business and we get on with ours.

i was under the impression that both germany and france were currently against turkey joining the union...

plus the issue of Cyprus and Armenia need to be sorted before any sort talks can begin.

The EU is a non democractic, non accountable proposition so they can take all the polls the like.Won't make a blind bit of difference.

Yeah sure, the EU is more of a whole than Turkey, hence why all those germans emigrate to Turkey.....oh wait.
