For anyone who has ever wondered what their boss earns or how much their friends and neighbours are worth: move to Norway. Oslo has set a new standard in transparency by publishing all citizens' tax records online.

Norwegians have been thrown into a frenzy of snooping following the publication of the latest tax records on the internet.

Not a new story but apparently these returns are listed on their tax website today. Seems it lists tax returns for everyone in the country & I was told today lots of people searching co-corkers and neighbours details. Would this work in Ireland? Not sure if I would favour it...

Interesting that Norway PM only earns E125k in a country with very high standard of living. No chance our "PM" would vote for something like this on his salary.

I can't recall the exact figures, but I read recently that the difference between the poorest and richest people in Denmark (I'm sure the situation is similar in Norway) is amazingly small - a fraction of what it is in 'selfish capitalist' countries like the US, UK - or Ireland.

Some might say this hampers ambition and enterprise, but given that the Scandinavians punch above their weight in business terms (think of the number of well-known Scandinavian firms), this does not appear to be the case at all. Also, it's been shown many times that the more equal societies are, the happier they are. Scandinavia, though certainly not perfect, does seem to be as close to a social paradise as any society that has ever existed.

I'm not sure why this is news. I lived there for a few years in the 90s and the skattelisten (the tax list) was always available online, for anyone to see. i.e. you could pop into the website ( Søk i skattelistene for 2006, 2007 og 2008 - DN.no) and see how much someone paid in income tax for a given year. For the curious...the table headings on that site are as follows:..."Inntekt" means "income" and "skatt" means tax paid. can't remember what Formue means. A euro is worth about 10 norwegian kroner, so divide by ten, to get an idea of comparable salaries.

I did say it wasn't new news, just thought it would be interesting given current issues tax issues in Ireland & who is paying their share...

Not sure how much detail is provided but this would probably mean would indirectly know how much your friends and neighbours earn. It would also probably highlight the people taking advantage of tax loopholes & tax saving incentives. The downside is it would make everyone very nosey.

No chance Irish politician salaries will be benchmarked against Norway.

In the US I believe you can see the actual selling price for houses. Would drive people here nuts.
