Germany wants EU ban on Holocaust Denial

Germany wants a EU ban on Holocaust Denial according this mornings Irish Times.

The German Interior Minister, Ms Zypries, is to propose to the other EU States that the ban be extended to cover all of the EU as a matter of Law.

She says 'We believe there are limits to freedom of expression'.

Apparently not only Germany but Austria, Belgium and France have such Laws already.

Zypries said she thought mandatory sentences of one to three years in prison would be appropriate for Holocaust denial.

She does not rule out that it could be extended to cover other areas.

'We want to make one step after another. That's why we should only concentrate on Jews and in a second step deal with other problems in Europe.

This woman is a political nutball who must be stopped. The censorship of historical investigation is not a sign of democracies but of dictatorships.

I always feared that this would be the next move these loonies would make...

In the name of legitimacy, here's a link.
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the internet, we know this is not true.

What? Its a restriction on freedom of speech.

    Seems fairly apt.

Well questions the legality when the law is passed.

Why on why does the EU have to get involved with such trivilalities? Niggly things like this and the shape of bananas is what is going to undermine the EU project in the end. Stupid and a step against our freedoms.

this is outragous. It is a countrys own choice on what stance to take on this topic as with all history. Let the people of each individual member country vote instead of this act being forced upon us by german who feel a little guilty for what they have done.

While I can understand the German (etc) ban on the basis that it would be possible to make political capital out of denial in those countries, it's hard to see how that reasoning applies to Ireland...

    this aint new
It was on the cards the year before last
It is part of an act/legislation against fascism and to curb racism
Part of the act was ban on Nazi symbols and holocaust denial
However certain countries, mainly the new ones, where against it as they wanted it to include similar bans on communist symbols

It good to see it back on the agenda, I personally support such a ban on holocaust denial and "unconstitutional symbols"
