EU authors and publishing houses *out* of the Google Book Settlement (GBS)

an EC meeting yesterday on anti-trust elements of the GBS yielded this :
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...an-titles.html
    * Excellent* news thus far, with Google having breached 5 million copyrights, having no workable data privacy policy and
using deposit libraries to achieve a digitisation project that paid scant attention to holders of intellectual property rights.

The US Library of Congress opted out ages ago, Oxford Library did not. lnterestingly most info in lreland came via the excellent Poetry Ireland site which published an author info and resource page bringing in the Berne Convention ( Victor Hugo drafted that ) and the anti-trust/class action hearings ( class action led by amongst others the Steinbeck estate ) . l know individual authors who have already taken legal advice and opted out of the deal. one being a serious poet whose novels were classified as 'juvenile' ffs.

Euractiv coverage on this : http://www.euractiv.com/en/innovatio...article-185200

In short the problems with the monolithic settlement include monolopy, censorship, data privacy and other concerns raised here
and in other publications with interest in privacy/data retention and intellectual property rights.

meanwhile in the US , antitrust and copyright issues are causing legal difficulties with one speaker stating that the GBS in its present form is usurping the library of congress. The Library of Congress, unlike Oxford Library is not taking part in the ludicrious digitisation scheme which leaves out pictorials and forewords. U.S. Says Google Settlement ?Raises Concerns,? This is outright censorship, intended at preventing US access to books that are "on sale on Europe but not in the US".
