Free speech, French-style: Le Pen convicted for defending Nazi occupation of France

Jean-Marie Le Pen is a horrible old bigot, but in most civilised countries, being a horrible old bigot is not against the law. However, a French appeals court upheld his conviction for 'contesting crimes against humanity'. His offence? Claiming that the Nazi occupation of France was not 'particularly inhumane'.

A Paris appeals court upheld the three-month suspended prison sentence and €10,000 (8,283) fine handed to Le Pen in 2009.
Le Pen had told the far-right magazine Rivarol in 2005: "in France at least the German occupation was not particularly inhumane, even if there were a number of excesses – inevitable in a country of 550,000 sq km."
He added: "If the Germans had carried out mass executions across the country as the received wisdom would have it, then there wouldn't have been any need for concentration camps for political deportees."
Free speech is pointless if it doesn't apply to those with whom we disagree.

If that type of law is applied here, we'll have no taxi drivers left.

Sure the holocaust never happened to the same extent that the allies made out…….

How far should free speech be allowed to go?

You should be able to say "not one Jew died in a camp" and not worry about the government arresting you. It is a horrible thing denying the Holocaust, one of the most disgusting things a person can say, but it shouldn't be a crime.

Making it a crime in my opinion gives them people more creedence then having an open debate with them.

He's not justifying it. Fact: Wehrmacht reprisal rates were massively higher in the East. Average soldier got his head put on the block for roughing up locals in France. In Russia, it was a free-for-all with bitter contempt.

It is a crime because it denies the suffering, torture and murder of men, women, children and infants only because they were Jews, gypsies, homosexuals or considered good-for-nothing.

Free speech is one thing; but, stupidity and causing blatant offence by it should always be a crime.
