    People before Progress

    Richard Boyd Barrett won a seat on Dun Laoghaire Council, heading the poll in his area. His main claim to fame has been his opposition to the proposed Baths Development. It is likely they will stay derelict for another 20 years, much to the delight of the Sandycove residents. He has now announced that his organisation will oppose the building of a new library in Moran park, currently used by a lawn bowling club (to be relocated) but mainly as a "recreation" area for cider drinkers and drug addicts. He says its one of the few green areas left - I think he was talking about the stagnant pond which is covered with algae and beer cans. I am fascinated by the support this organisation has gathered - does it mean that the drug problem is much bigger than we thought, or could it be that our illiterate population is asserting itself. I know its parochial but I am interested in hearing from the socialists online.

    Wombat
    I believe that people have got to impose ownership on their own local communities, and if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem

    Oh no, a councillor that favours the communities wishes over the profits of developers. I'm glad richard got such a brilliant vote, we need more people like him in elected positions. The people voted for someone who would represent them, he obviously does...so what's the problem?

    Why do you keep on insulting people by calling them illiterate

    Maybe turds1 has a point:

    The Examiner Sept 2006 "A total of 22.6 % of the Irish population were identified as functionally illiterate. ... That shameful figure is connected to another: 19.4 % of the population is at risk of poverty. These conditions invariably go hand-in-hand. They are just two of the depressing figures contained in Developing a Fairer Ireland,{CORI Report}

    From results of Local Election re R B Barrett
    In 2009, he contested the local elections for the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown county council and was elected with 22.8% of the vote

    probably just a coincidence

    I was actually hoping for an insight as to why the councillor objects to a library.

    Easy Wombat, It is a lot easier to be an objector than to be a creator, it is far less work and you get to have a good social life.

    It's only an excuse to get some publicity and get into the Southside people which is nothing more than a left-wing rag. Mind you Boyd Barrett would hold a protest over the opening of a paper bag. Moran Park where the proposed library is due to be built is a no-go area used as a cider den for the local down and outs, it really is an eyesore.
