As you may be aware, 250,000 tonnes of waste from the Republic was dumped in NI in 20 identified sites from October 2002 - 2004.
A settlement between the two governments and brokered by the EU will see our government pay 3m to clean up and take back the waste from 2 sites. As there are 20 sites involved, the end amount will almost certainly run to tens of millions.
So far the authorities in NI have prosecuted, fined and jailed some of the landowners and perpetrators. The amounts confiscated by the Serious Organised Crime Agency is ST£800,000. This is against the NI cost of the clean-up of the two sites of ST£600,000.
What has the government done on this side of the border to go after those responsible with businesses and addresses in the Republic? Or are we going to be out of pocket (again) while criminals (white and blue) enjoy the proceeds of cheating and corruption.
