Eel be sorry: Mary White bashes Eamon Ryan

GREEN PARTY deputy leader Mary White has criticised as “fundamentally flawed” the decision of her party colleague Minister for Natural Resources Eamon Ryan to agree a 100 per cent ban on eel fishing until 2012.

In fairness, this was a dumb move by Ryan.

The EU didn't call for a ban, and therefore didn't provide any compensation, but he went ahead with a ban, and left the fishermen without a pot to piss in.

The eel does need immediate protection, but it needs protection from ESB turbines on the Shannon, not the fishermen.

I thought this kind of decision would have to be made by Brendan Smith, no?

You would think that the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food would be in charge of inland fisheries, but it's actually only sea fisheries that he's in charge of.
