Interesting to look at the recent cold spell and its effect on wind generation. Take Christmas Eve for example. Wind output was very low for the whole day (averaging about 60MW), but demand peaked at 4400MW.

S of I have measuring masts on a lot of very good wind sites and they performed somewhat better than the installed fleet when converted to capacity factor, but not by that much.

Have a look at the stats for Britain, much the same right.

Now consider those two facts in any future discussion on interconnection.

This however ceases to be a problem when you have large scale storage, because demand is largely fed from hydro rather than wind.

Ok, though I wasn't making a point against storage, for interconnection - ,more against the idea (expressed by some serious people on this thread a while ago) that renewables, together with "demand management" can meet our needs.

Why not, if you have storage?

I have to admit that I am not a fan of demand management, I would favour real energy efficiency measures over giving some central authority control of my fridge or my dinner.

From an engineering viewpoint a 100% renewable situation is very feasible, however it should be accomplished over 25 year timespan to prevent any destruction of capital already invested in thermal plants.

Should we do it is a different question, even I would feel comfortable with having a few modern CCGT plants in the neighbourhood, but those cheap and cheerful open cycle goldmines should be outlawed immediately.

In order to achieve this goal, there would need to be a national buy in, including the environmentalist lobby.

So you use the stored water to generate electricity when there's no wind.
What happens when the reservoir is empty and you still have no wind?

Exactly - we freeze. Where is the pumped storage meant to be ? Pumbed storage is only useful for generating power for short periods of time to cover peaks in demand. Where are the huge pumped storagefacilities for continuous generation going to be built in Ireland ? - There are no suitable sites with the required upper and lower level reservoirs and a suitable height difference between them.
