AN unplanned, involuntary and more chaotic version of Earth Hour was forced upon Sydney's CBD and eastern suburbs yesterday afternoon when blackouts plunged 70,000 houses and businesses into darkness.
Some might even suggest the blackouts were more successful than Sydney's Earth Hour efforts.
While 50 per cent of Sydneysiders are believed to have switched off their lights for one hour on Saturday night, yesterday's blackouts went for 2 1/2 hours and enjoyed a much higher take-up rate in affected areas.
Hitting about 4.45pm, the blackouts extended from Circular Quay, where the Opera House was forced to cancel performances, to Redfern and Chippendale, affecting some buildings more than others with seemingly arbitrary logic.
While some found themselves completely without power others were unaffected.
Eastern suburbs such as Coogee, Dover Heights and Bondi Junction reported power losses, while pockets of Paddington, Rose Bay and Darlinghurst were also affected.
EnergyAustralia yesterday said faults on four major power cables were to blame for the outages.
