Coral Reef Damage From CO2-Warming Was Overblown Hype:

Good news at last. The corals are safe.

Big-Government funded scientists and Big-Soros funded leftist-AGW-activists all predicted that CO2-induced "global warming" would cause permanent damage to the world's coral reefs. Now three new studies have found that the predictions of coral reefs' demise from AGW is categorically false.

Damning New Investigation Into Climategate Inquiries
Published by Lord Turnbull and Andrew Montford of the 'Global Warming Policy Foundation' (GWPF). Views expressed in the publication are those of the authors, not those of the GWPF, its Trustees, its Academic Advisory Council members or its Directors.

The Global Warming Policy Foundation is a United Kingdom group opposing action to mitigate climate change. The group's banner image sports a short-term temperature graph to appear as though the world is not warming. It was found to contain an error for 2003 by Hannah Devlin of The Times, who also pointed out that if the period from 2000-2009 had been chosen, then a rise in temperature would have been shown rather than a fall. The error was also commented on by Bob Ward of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, who said the graph was contrary to the true measurements, and that by leaving out the temperature trend during the 20th century the graph obscured the fact that 8 of the 10 hottest years on record have occurred this century. The Global Warming Policy Foundation does not reveal where it's funding comes from.

Five questions for Lord Lawson and Benny Peiser (GWPF):
    1. Who funds the Global Warming Policy Foundation?

Lord-Lawson-Benny-PeiserLord Lawson has written in the Independent on Sunday:

“the GWPF was “funded entirely by voluntary donations from a number of private individuals and charitable trusts. In order to make clear its complete independence, it does not accept gifts from either energy companies or anyone with a significant interest in an energy company”.”

Who are these private individuals and charitable trusts?

    2. Why is the GWPF sharing offices with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining?

The GWPF are based at 1 Carlton House Terrace, SW1Y 5DB.

Also at this address is the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, which “exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community.”

3.What links does Lord Lawson have with big oil?

Lord Lawson told Channel 4 News that, “I have no links to oil companies of any kind”.

But the Central Europe Trust – which he chairs and in which he has “significant shareholdings” – claim as clients BP Amoco, Royal Dutch/Shell Group, Texaco, and Total Fina Elf.

4.Why does the GWPF’s academic advisory council include a number of climate sceptics?

The aim of the GWPF “is to provide the most robust and reliable economic analysis and advice”.

Why then does their small academic advisory council include well known climate sceptics including:

    • Ian Plimer, the author of “Heaven and Earth – Global Warming: The Missing Science”

    • Philip Stott who has written that “global warming is a faith“

    • Sir Ian Byatt who has faced calls to be sacked as chairman of Scotland’s water regulator for his thoughts on climate change; and

    • Professor Richard Lindzen who appeared on the Great Global Warming Swindle.

    5. Why does the GWPF’s board of trustees include a known climate sceptic?

The Liverpool Daily Post quotes remarks made by GWPF trustee, the Bishop of Chester:

The row followed the Bishop of Chester’s speech in a House of Lords debate on energy, in which he said discussion about the causes of global warming was “still open”.

Describing himself as a “scientist in a previous incarnation”, Dr Forster – whose diocese includes Wirral – said there was no consensus among climate scientists that “carbon dioxide levels are the key determinant”.

And he told peers: “Climate science is a notoriously imprecise area, because the phenomena under investigation are so large.

“That makes precision difficult to achieve.”
Lord Turnbull called Gordon Brown a "branded Stalinist". Lord Turnbull betrays civil service. Lord Turnbull is a Crossbench member of the House of Lords.

Andrew Montford is the author of 'The Hockey Stick Illusion' (already debunked). Andrew Montford has been appointed by the GWPF to conduct said "enquiry". This is ironic not just because Montford cannot be described as objective, but also because he is critical of 'fake charities' on his website Bishop Hill. Montford criticises WWF for example for taking funds from the EU however the Global Warming Policy Foundation's own funding has been deeply obscured.

A further debate can be seen in The Observer 'The Science of Climate Change - Robin McKie v Benny Peiser'.

Not at all. And it doesn't help posting right wing propaganda from the 'c3' website.

Coral reefs have declined over the course of human history, culminating
in the dramatic increase in coral mortality and reef degradation of the past
20-50 years (Pandolfi et al., 2003)

Corals and the Threat of Global Climate Change
It now appears that corals are threatened by global climate change. These threats are outlined in a recent report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) entitled "Coral Reefs and Climate Change". According to an earlier report, "Reefs at Risk" (a joint publication of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) , International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and WWF), global climate change is expected to lead to the following changes over the next century:

    * increased air and sea surface temperatures
    * rises in sea level
    * changes in weather patterns
    * more frequent storms, droughts, floods and other extreme weather in some places
    * possible alteration of ocean circulation patterns
    * changes in seawater chemistry due to increased carbon dioxide concentrations
Climate Change Putting Coral Reefs At Risk

And now see what can help corals to recover:
Coral Can Recover from Climate Change Damage, New Research Suggests
Increases in ocean surface water temperatures subject coral reefs to stresses that lead quickly to mass bleaching. The problem is intensified by ocean acidification, which is also caused by increased CO2. This decreases the ability of corals to produce calcium carbonate (chalk).
    ...
"In order to protect reefs in the long-term we need radical action to reduce CO2 emissions. However, our research shows that local action to reduce the effects of fishing can contribute meaningfully to the fate of reefs. The reserve allowed the number of parrotfishes to increase and because parrotfish eat seaweeds, the corals could grow freely without being swamped by weeds. As a result, reefs inside the park were showing recovery whereas those with more seaweed were not. This sort of evidence may help persuade governments to reduce the fishing of key herbivores like parrotfishes and help reefs cope with the inevitable threats posed by climate change."

Here is another little "bio" of Marc Morano, one of the sleaziest of the denier crowd.

    Marc Morano
    Morano and Climate Depot

In 2009 Marc Morano became the executive director and chief correspondent of a new climate change website, ClimateDepot.com. ClimateDepot is news website that publishes information denying the existence of human-induced global warming. ClimateDepot is a project of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow--a conservative think tank, based out of Washington, D.C.
    Morano and Senator Jim Inhofe

From 2006 to 2009 Morano was the communications director for Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the minority chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Prior to the last election, Inhofe was the majority chair of the EPWC.

In the 2002 election cycle, Inhofe received more in donations from the oil and gas sector than any other Senator. According to the latest available election financing data, in the last five years Inhofe has received just over $3.4 million in donations from 20 industry sectors - almost $1 million (29%) is from the Energy/Natural Resources Sector and their respective PACS.

Sen. Inhofe is well known for his infamous quote that "the threat of catastrophic global warming the "greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people," and as his communications director, Mornano has spent the last two years perpetuating this message.

Other contentious statements by Inhofe include: “If we were to embrace the Kyoto treaty, it would shut down agriculture, military and oil production in Oklahoma...” and commenting on Tom Brokaw's recent climate change documentary: "It kind of reminds . . . I could use the Third Reich, the big lie."
Morano and the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth

Prior to working for Senator Inhofe, Morano was a journalist with Cybercast News Service, which is owned and operated by the Media Research Center (MRC). The MRC is supported in part by right-wing foundations and funding from industry, including over $200,000 from oil-giant ExxonMobil.

According to Sourcewatch, CNS and Morano were the first source of the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" campaign against presidential nominee Senator John Kerry. In the run up to the official launch of the Swiftboat campaign, Morano wrote, "[h]undreds of former commanders and military colleagues of presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry are set to declare in a signed letter that he is 'unfit to be commander-in-chief.'"
    Morano and Rush Limbaugh

From 1992 to 1996, Morano worked as a producer for the Rush Limbaugh Television Show and was known as "Limbaugh's man in Washington."

Those studies, VD, do not say what you and your reference imply. Quite the opposite. They affirm that climate change will destroy most of the world's reefs by mid century. They are about ways in which some can be preserved in spite of climate change. Here is the Crabbe paper more fully.

SSPP: Identifying management needs for sustainable coral-reef ecosystems

"While climate change, through rising SSTs and coral bleaching, has the potential to destroy the majority of reefs by 2050, application of some, if not all, of the learning outcomes mentioned above will help in the resilience of the corals to anthropogenic and other insults. There are some examples of successful management, not least from the Caribbean Region, which has suffered overfishing and reef decline for many years. Several years ago, the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, working with the University of the West Indies, launched a number of initiatives (encompassing points 3-6 and point 9 from Box 1) on Dairy Bull Reef, on the north coast of Jamaica. This policy program resulted in a turnaround, leading to reef recovery (Idjadi et al. 2006). Most interestingly, following the Caribbean-wide bleaching event of 2005, live coral cover dropped to about 13% (from 46% in the previous year) and Acropora speciesbranching coral to about 2% (from 33% in the previous year). Three years later, the coral cover at Dairy Bull Reef had increased to over 30% and Acropora speciesbranching coral to over 20%.2 This recovery to near-prebleaching levels suggests that application of ICZM can lead to reef resilience, even in the face of climate change. The further application of sustainability science and ICZM for coral reefs, in cooperation with grassroots organizations (Sobeck, 2008), will need enhancement from all stakeholders. As Gandhi said, “The world has enough for everybody’s need but not for anybody’s greed.” "

This is a joke - right?

The deniers are so manic obsessive about the faux-scandal "Climategate" they pushed the media into highlighting that they are now obsessing about the many enquires that cleared the scientists falsely accused.

Yes, folks, the deniers are holding enquiries into the enquiries.

This particular one was held by Thatcherite Lawson's Global Warming Policy Foundation, a denier front that Lawson refuses to admit is funded by teh energy industry.

Could we have a bit less spam on the thread from right-wing nutjob websites and world government fantasists? Not to mention mangled and cherry-picked scientific studies.
