Opposition parties to ban oil exploration in Irish waters.

As things stand this morning, Ireland looks set to become the fourth country in the world to ban oil exploration in its waters. The government opposes the bill proposed by Bríd Smith of Solidarity/People Before Profit but - with Fianna Fail, Sinn Féin and Labour all stating they will be supporting the Bill - that will be enough to ensure that it passes.

Costa Rica, Belize and France have already implemented similar laws.

This looks like virtue-signalling of the worst kind. We're welshing (sorry, Cambrian cousins) on environmental commitments in other areas but will get international plaudits from certain quarters for this. Wonderful.....

Speaking of vitue signalling....Eamon "bailout" Ryan....in a previous life as an opposition TD....the type of thing you do before you become a minister......

What is the veggie position on this ?

Why does Eamon Ryan keep telling the same lies about Corrib Gas?

Almost as bad as cycling to the Dail, and having the ministerial merk carry the brief case two hundred yards behind, out of sight of the observing public.

It could well be the motivation is that National assets such as oil aren't, well, asset stripped, such that all the revenue goes out of the country.

And it is 100% virtue signalling because we are buying just as much foreign oil as before
The measure will only stop us using our own
