Possibly in this case but thats just one scenario and the Irish Gov certainly didnt know that this would be the case when they made those extremely bad deals.. Poor fare from Dublin.

I would take a different view, if which is the case at the moment, Ordinary Irish Folk will not benefit in the same way Norwegian People do from the extraction of our natural resources then they should be left there!

But this is classic Greenism - usually, middle class imbeciles going through a massive crisis of conscience because every material good they could ever want is within arm's length, so therefore everyone else should suffer!

I have it on reliable authority that there is massive reserves of natural oil and gas out there and there is no other magic bullet that could conceivably make us a genuinely wealthy egalitarian society, except extracting those reserves in such a way as to benefit us all, but that is even less likely to happen than bringing in this ban!

Let them have their fun in the sandpit. Let the law pass.

It can be repealed down the line when the herd of populist cretins who support this kind of nonsense are gone and forgotten.

If it is the case that there are significant reserves of oil and gas all around the Irish coast - and the geophysics says there are - then the reason they are not developed can only be because the politicians have been compromised or paid off with bribes to not develop them. Therefore a serious effort should be undertaken by citizens to dig out the facts about the bribes paid all across the Irish political class for reasons including but not limited to foreign states' interests in not having Ireland develop an independent economic policy based on developing its extensive natural resources.

This kind of investigation can complement an investigation into the unions, into why they had a slush fund containing some millions of euros for use by their officials, why and how O'Connor agreed to a quick repayment of part of the amount by SIPTU in order to deflect and defuse rather than investigate, uncover and prosecute.

Bribes paid to the unions make a mockery of the negotiation of contracts, the facts around the casualisation of Irish Ferries - including the preposterous vision of cynical union officials leading marches about that while taking corrupt payments behind the scenes - and all anti-worker neo-liberal-supporting legislation undertaken over the last 20 years.

The entire sphere of Irish public life in almost all its parts is corrupt and has been since the foundation of the state. Shooting the most progressive elements in the country, overseeing an acceleration of the decline of the Irish language and creating gulags containing more people per capita than the Soviet Union, as well as death rates in homes for children that exceeded the death rates of Japanese prisoner of war camps - the entire edifice of these disgusting jumped up chancers and charlatans should be dismantled. Beginning with slinging the thug Ahern in prison.

Apart from all the waffle in the Dáil, it doesn't seem like it has to be the worst thing in the world.

-While oil is cheap, buy it elsewhere and store this for the future.
-Migrate to renewables as much as makes sense* and let the tech for oil exploration and drilling improve for 20 years or so.
-Create a small and efficient* National Exploration Unit at some point to map it out.
-Tap the oil for national interests

    *yeah, I know

Without exploration there is no revenue whatsoever though.

If Putin wanted to damage EU economies he couldnt come up with a better bill than one which stops us drilling for our own oil. Makes you think doesnt it.......
