    New motor tax rates announced

Minister for the Environment, John Gormley TD has announced the seven new bands of motor tax rates to be implemented from July 1st. These rates represent taxation based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicles, and will be applied on new and imported vehicles from July.

    · Band A, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of under 120grams per kilometre, the motor tax rate will be 100.
    · Band B, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of between 121 and 140 grams per kilometre, the rate will be 150.
    · Band C, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of between 141 and 155grams per kilometre, the rate will be 290.
    · Band D, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of between 156 and 170 grams per kilometre, the rate will be 430.
    · Band E which corresponds to CO2 emissions of between 171 and 190grams per kilometre, the rate will be 600.
    · Band F, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of between 191 and 225 grams per kilometre, the rate will be 1,000.
    · Band G will be the top band and the rate will be 2,000, reflecting CO2 emissions of over 225grams per kilometre.

Anyone else envisage it becoming a status symbol which band your car fits into? The higher the better?

I see the possibility of rich, irreverant feckers talking about their hugecars saying 'Yeah mine's a focking G Class, yeah really hits the spot like'.

Possibly. Are there many cars/SUVs/whatever out there at the moment that would fit into the top category?

Anyone know where we can check out what cars fall into what group?
    Thanks...

Is this VRT, rather than motor tax?

This is a tax on family cars. Ordinary families will be heavily penalised.

Will the current regime continue to apply to older cars?
