A family car such as a 2.0l petrol enfined Opel Zaffira (hardly a car anyone would choose to buy) will now cost over €1,000 to tax.

The tax on diesel engines will be less, but many people could not afford to buy the higher priced diesel engines.

If they now decide to sell their Zaffira, they will be screwed because the 2nd hand price will collapse.

This is a tax on families.
As usual, you have this arseways.

If someone already owns a Zafira, they will continue to pay motor tax under the old regime. The second hand car market will not be affected, other than if a lot of people decided to buy new cars to benefit from lower motor tax.

Families will only be exposed when they buy a new car, and they can choose an efficient car if they want to pay less tax.

A diesel Ford SMax would be 430, compared to 600 now.
Yes, I didn't notice that it applies to new vehicles only.

Changes to VRT effects new cars and new cars only.
Maybe in the Independent Republic of Sligo, but, in this instance, not for the rest of us.
The only way to change the world is to win elections.

My reading of it was that it'll only apply to new cars from next June. Cars registered before that will just have the 9.5% or 11.5% tax hike. the VRT reform will drop the cost of Diesel cars probably to that of an equivalend petrol.

in the case of the Zafira, the 1.8 petrol will cost €600 a year to tax, the 1.9D will cost €430. the VRT rates will be 24% and 28% for Diesel and Petrol respectively .
    See rates below...

Then it is unworkable and will achieve nothing. People will not be incentivised to purchase cars with lower emissions, they are now encouraged to keep the cars they have.

Cradle to grave, that's far greener than buying a new car every few years

Eh no, at the very best it will hold our present carbon emmisions stagnant. Not lower them.

Just checked my car.. Ford Mondeo Diesel 115bhp TdCi, 2004.

154 grammes per Km. That makes me a Band C or E290 if it was a new car.

However as mine is a 2004 car I will continue to pay 560 + 9.5% increase.

Well done mr. gormleyE350 reduction for new car versus my car.
Remind me to vote for one of your colleagues next time.
