This discussion seems to have gone a bit wild...So lets just get the facts right for everyone.

What will be the tax on:

    1.4 standard petrol car?

    1.2 standard?

    2.0L standard?

Tax for a full year on the new system?

Well, I think some families are guilty of going overboard with their 'family' car. For example, my husband's colleague's wife has just become pregnant. It will be their first child. They have just bought a people-carrier because they 'need' it now that they have a baby on the way. I also know another young couple with one toddler. The wife sold her mini cooper to buy an SUV when she was pregnant too. I know with child seat regulations now, people with three or more children can definitely use bigger cars but there are a huge number of couples out there with only one or two young children who are driving around in huge people carriers/ SUVs. You know what? They can downsize their cars if the motor-tax is too much for them.

    Usually. But not this time.
Then it is unworkable and will achieve nothing. People will not be incentivised to purchase cars with lower emissions, they are now encouraged to keep the cars they have.

    A coup for the Greens....NOT
actually, keeping your old car is rather green, the carbon cost of making a new one is approximately equal to all the fuel it will ever consume, I think. And when the current 4 wheeled friend falls off the road, you betcha most people will buy so as to slot in lower on the tax bands. For those who like to boast about the size of their cars (BCSD, BCSD, as Madame Cyn used to say), we should applaud their patriotism in boosting tax revenues and paying for everyone else's public transport and green lecky generation schemes.

I wouldn't recommend petrol tax increases at the moment.... the oil price is doing this for us. Presumably, the higher the cost of motion lotion, the higher the VAT receipts???

BTW, the luverly Zafira also comes in 1.6L petrol (or at least, that is what the one I drive says it is). Since it emits 177gCO2/km, I think it also must be a band E (600 yoyos/annum). Thanks to various European directives, I would HOPE that the car manufacturers will cop on to "market forces" and drop the consumption on people carriers soon....

Don't think Gormo has gone far enough on the REALLY big SUVs and sports cars.... I propose a band H.... 10grand a year for a LandCruiser, Volvo XC90, 5L Jeep..... this is now a moral issue, the biofuel to fill ONE tank derives from grain that could feed a person for a year. Jaysis, where is the Church when we need it?? Anyone heard any good sermons on GREED recently???

This is true....although, I have to say, having a people carrier (small one!) for 2 kids means we don't have to fly to the UK, we drive/ferry with all our stuff (and avoid $^*&%# Ryanair and their $^^$*&* baggage charges). Maximum greenie points to me, purlease!! I doubt, however, that most of the people driving big MPVs, SUVs etc do the same. Many folks do downsize when their kids get older, it's the amount of room that the buggies and travel cots etc take up that causes the problem with babies. Babies also have an environmental cost, if we're going to have kids, we should possibly pay the taxes. Which are adequately offset by the child benefit anyway, if you feel you need a bigger car!
