Should Global Warming/Climate Change denial be a crime?.

Simple question, Should people who deny global warming/climate change or question the findings of the IPCC be prosecuted?. What punishment should they recieve (if any) ?.

You're hardly trying to compare someone who denies global warming (of whom there are many) with people who deny the holocaust (of whom there are very few)?

Seems a tad irrational to me. The holocaust killed millions, global warming has, as of yet, not killed very many..... unless you blame all weather related deaths on global warming, which again seems quite irrational to me. Weather, by its very nature is unpredictable and therefore there is no way of knowing whether some natural disaster, like Katrina, can blamed solely on global warming.

Of course not. The majority of those who deny that climate change is real, or man-made, do so because they believe the extremely expensive misinformation campaigns put out by interested parties like Exxon.

Those who funded, designed, or initiated such campaigns, and thereby retarded political action for their own benefit? Yes - in about 20 years, when enough of the chickens have come home to roost, I think there would be scope for a charge of crimes against humanity, but you'd need to prove that they had sufficient evidence to know that what they were doing was actually fraudulent.

Definitely not. Anyone has the right to be deluded. "I don't agree with you, but I'll fight for your right to have that opinion." and all that.

Obviously not as many scientists downplay human activity in climate change. Anyone denying climate change in general, be it man-made and/or natural, is a bit mad.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is a serious question but assuming it is global warmning 'denial' shouldn't be declared illegal but should be ruthlessly challenged and mocked at every opportunity.

Or, you could punish them by talking about the Eurovision for a few hours...

I'm sure the Church had a similar attitude towards Galileo for saying there were moons orbiting Jupiter.

Anyway the fact a thread like this can show up is an indication of how polarised the debate has become.

Should we adopt a similar approach to those who deny that Abortion is murder?

Although, one day perhaps, when I'm holding the reigns of power I may take you up on your proposal. Except I'll throw the CO2 driving Global Warming proponents in prison for perpetuating hysteria and fraudulent deception on the Irish People.
Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK
