Gore wins Nobel Prize, Presidency next?

As widely anticipated for quite some time, Al Gore has this morning been announced as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Whilst Hillary Clinton is beginning to be seen as the de facto next Democrat Nominee - could Gore be the next Democratic nominees, and thus President.

It was suggested to me earlier this year that three things would happen:

    1) Gore would win an oscar for his film
    2) Gore would win the Nobel prize
    3) While Clinton, Obama et all tear themselves (and the Democratic Party) apart, Gore would be seen as the person to unite the party, and a 'Draft Gore' campaign would begin.

What do people think, firstly about the implications of Gore winning the Nobel prize, and secondly, about whether or not he will make a run for the White House next year, and if he does run, whether he can win (again ).

Excellent. Perhaps The West Wing will become true after all.

I do not think so. If he runs and loses, it would be a big fall for a celeb like him

    'Peace prize'?
Why a peace prize? Is it because saving the planet will prevent wars? A bit far reaching, surely?

Really? I'm very surprised by that. Because he made a movie? All seems way OTT to me. Would there not have been others more deserving? The Anna Liu Burmese Democracy protester for instance? She's been under house arrest for 20 years or something.

Charlie Cook one of the most experienced Washington analysts feels that he won't run as at this stage of the campaign it is far too late. Hillary Clinton is now well ahead of any opposition and many Democrats don't trust him because of the strategy he employed in the Florida recount fiasco.

Didn't David Trimble win that, once?
Seems to be about as auspicious as winning eurovision

The problem for him is that Clinton is doing too well. If she was still seen as a divisive figure nationally, and Obama was considered too young and inexperienced, he would have a brilliant chance.

Also people might see it as a symbolic act of righting the wrongs of 2000 by voting for Gore, a sort of pennence or absolution for the last 8years.

Personally, i'd love to see him become president. Gore is a southern gentleman, like George Washington.

Good point Bobb - is the prize an irrlevance, or purely a recognition of past performance and no indication of future returns?
