No VRT on Kei cars 0.8 litres or less to save the planet

I just thought of a proposal that might go a long way towards reducing fuel consumption.

Remove VRT on cars with <0.8L engines!...

This could help the start of Japanese "kei car" segment imports. And they're rather interesting beasts - even including some micro-SUVs that would work for Ireland's country roads.

Great idea, a positive tax incentive working through retail prices that could be easily administered within the existing VRT tax admin,so it could be running after the next budget. Tell Brian Cowen! It's only a start, though.

There are rumours that the forthcoming budget is going to change the motor car tax system to one not based on engine size, but to one based on CO2 emissions, data for which is available for every make of car. See http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/

Is any one else aware of this?

What are the euroncap safety ratings of these cars?

Passenger safety is my biggest requirement.

Watching France play Namibia the other night, one of the commentators remarked that Sebastien Chabal (aka The Caveman), the 6’3”, 18.5 stone French No 8, drives a Smart car.

I believe the engine size range is 0.6l - 0.8l.

    That must be some sight.

I heard that myself. I have difficulty fitting in a smart car, and I'm half the size of him.

Really? I've only been in the one, but it was quite comfy.
