A whistle-blower at the climate denial (and pro-smoking) US think tank the Heartland Institute has leaked a sheaf of documents exposing how money is channelled to fake "scientists" so that they can obfuscate and confuse the public over climate change.

An anonymous donor calling him (or her)self "Heartland Insider" has released the Heartland Institute's budget, fundraising plan, its Climate Strategy for 2012 and sundry other documents (all attached) that prove all of the worst allegations that have been levelled against the organization.

It is clear from the documents that Heartland advocates against responsible climate mitigation and then uses that advocacy to raise money from oil companies and "other corporations whose interests are threatened by climate policies." Heartland particularly celebrates the funding that it receives from the fossil fuel fortune being the Charles G. Koch Foundation.

More from the BBC on this story, which is really no surprise. It was well known that wealthy magnates in fossil fuel were funding climate science denialists.

Recently, a leading climate science denialist, Viscount Monckton, was caught on video planning an approach to the Australian "super-rich" to obtain funds to set up a propaganda TV station. Fox News was the quoted example.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of that, the big issue is surely this: when the Heartland Institute speaks on climate change, it is speaking with the money, fundamentally, of one major donor.

And we have no idea who he is.

The good news is that the Heartland Institute may lose its tax-exempt status over this.

Heartland does not have "scientists". Only one side has the vast majority of real scientists, over 97% of the discipline.

The Heartland crowd are just shills, who:

• have no labs
• take no field trips
• get no Science Foundation grants
• write no peer-reviewed papers
• attend no climate science conferences

Their sole job is to take good research done by real scientists and try to trash it on blogs or in the media.

What planet do you live on? - These were the tactics used for years by Big Tobacco to prevent smoking bans. Now the strategems have been transferred over to climate change denial.
