    A Single 166 Seat Constituency

Given that the Constituency Boundary Commission is currently looking for submissions, I was thinking of proposing that General Elections be based on one national 166 seat constituency.

    Pros:

    Perfect constitutional per capita representation
    Removes controversy re. country boundaries
Better proportional representation for all parties
Easier access to system for candidates with national profiles, without limiting prospects of local grafters
Easier access to the system for small parties
    Less Localism in system

    Cons:

    Long ballot papers
Manual count would be logistically problematic
    By-elections
The only way to change the world is to win elections.

Combine with a list system and the long ballot paper is sorted.

It would all have to be done in the one count centre too.

Electronic voting with a paper backup would sort this out. Upload the data from the machine to a secure FTP server, could be done very easily.

Was'nt there a Senate Election in the 1920's based on this idea - I think it did take them a week to work out the result!
