Clare County council decide to ban fracking operations in county development plan.

This happened today.
Have they the authority to actually do this?
I know every one is watching gaslands but as the technology improves I think its worth a look at.
The big problem is the visual impact I would think.
Then again wind farms and moronic housing developments went ahead without too much righteous indignation.
At the end of the day do we need the gas if it's there?
We are at the end of the pipe and as we are seeing with the debt crisis.
Little ol'Ireland is not on too many Christmas card list's.
Are we shooting ourselves in the foot yet again?
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

Little ol' Ireland will be on even less wish lists if we destroy the rural countryside and the water aquifers by gas fracking. Especially in a karst county like Clare. Clare County Council obviously have their heads screwed on, something too many councils obviously do not!

What is 'fracking'?
A P.ie moderator stated this on June 25th 2010: P.ie tolerates very broad free speech, and thus allows sectarian bigotry etc

better be shot in the foot than poisoned by a fracker - we have plenty of the stuff off our west coast but awe gave away that end of the pipe

It isn't happening in the Karst part of the county, the would be the north of the county as I understand it.
The south is underlain by mudstone which was deposited by an ancient river delta bigger than the Mississippi.
That formation runs all the way into mid Cork.
There is a similar formation underlying north Leinster, south Ulster.
It would give a level of energy independence and given the way things are going that might be no bad thing.
It's a very valid point you make re Aquifers, then again Dublin CC had no problem proposing a dump on top of one in Dublin.

Fracking without regulation = bad. Fracking with regulation = good. So given Irelands almost total lack of knowledge about oil, gas or anything else connected with hydrocarbons, except peat , I suppose banning it for now isn't a bad idea.
The Irish are not a serious people. Colm McCarthy to Miriam O'Callaghan.
