Liberty Hall - Replacing one eyesore with another

Maybe it is a matter of taste but I have always considered Liberty Hall to be a serious eyesore. The view down the river towards the Custom House could be something special if they put the train bridge under the river and removed Liberty Hall from the skyline. Instead it seems to be all go for the status quo. Any views out there? Sorry if this has been posted before.

Plans for taller Liberty Hall - The Irish Times - Sat, Dec 24, 2011

This quote from the architect is bizarre

Des McMahon of Gilroy McMahon Architects said the new design was for “a building of great visual lightness and elegance as well as a building that is wholeheartedly sustainable”.

What planet is he on? The proposed building is Hong Kong ugly.

    Awful.

Sounds like SIPTU have too much money to burn.

It should be called after the Bert, seeing as he initiated the Croke Park Agreement, and ultimately it is funding the project.

I rather like the proposed replacement.

(I don't like the loop bridge at all, but, like the herpes simplex virus and Oggy, I fear that it will always be with us.)

Clearly what dublin needs is more office space. Prices have dropped 80% in the last 2 years.

Is Irish Rail still thinking of putting a matching tower at the Tara st site?

That is a very good point. There are oceans of office space around the city.

So what should be done with Liberty Hall?

Abandon it, demolish it, sell it to NAMA/the Arabs? There's not much of a market for obsolete office blocks in Dublin these days.

If SIPTU own it and if it's past its sell by date, then they need to restore it.

Presumably they'll rent alternative office space while it's being rebuilt.
