The oil will be extracted and sold - if not to the US then to China, although it still looks likely Obama is stalling a Keystone announcement until after the 2012 election.
Better the US source it's oil from Canada than Saudi, but that is their decision.

The only interesting thing about the Canadian Kyoto announcement is that they chose to visibily step away, rather than maintain their previous approach of signing up to it while completely ignoring it. They obviously sense a shift in the political winds around this topic.
    Interesting times ahead.

Indeed and now that they have shown the way only more will follow. China and India where doing their best to drop hints.
I think Quatar may the final resting place for this madness.

Buries in an oil field. How fitting.

The fact is that most of the fossil fuels in the ground will have to be left there. Only what is essential to maintain economy stability and provide "seeding" energy for the changeover to renewable energy should be extracted. Natural gas and nuclear are possibilities.

Both Russia and Canada are ignoring the views of their scientists, and listening to the views of fossil fuel magnates. The calculation is that sort term monetary gains will outweigh long-term damage to the environment. It is easy to see that is so short-sighted as to be reckless.

They had to step away or pay billions in penalties for their deliberate avoidance of replacing fossil fuels. The "political shift" occurred years ago when Harper's party became the preferred destination of fossil fuel funding. Their abandonment of Kyoto has been telegraphed for quite a while.

So they joined a process to replace the Kyoto Protocol? That does not make sense. China is suffering from drought, and India from water shortages as the Himalayan glaciers recede. Neither country contains any sizable climate science denier influence, like the USA has the misfortune to have.

I think Quatar may the final resting place for this madness.

So deniers have been telling us annually for 17 years... "next year will be different". Yet
    • the global average temperature keeps going up,
    • ice caps and glaciers continue to recede,
    • instances of extreme droughts and extreme weather continue to occur,
    • heat records continue to be made far more than cold ones,
    • and sea level continues to rise ...

... this is not over yet. Not for a long, long time.

A extraordinary and groundless conclusion ... what funding has ended in the last 24 hours?

I suppose once the world's governments hear the word according to rash, they will leap to obey ... and then it is only a matter of time before Mother Nature obey's your command and turns down the thermostat.

To you, global warming is a sort of X-Factor, with you as Simon Cowell? .... if the public vote for blind stupidity instead, climate change will be voted off the stage and you will get a hit record! Brilliant. We can change the laws of physics instantly.

It is not true. There are no penalties only a requirement that delinquents try to make up the deficit. If they do not do that in the follow up, then there are vague and unenforceable provisions that would cost four times as much by 2020.

    Canada's position is outrageous: criminal.
