Remembering the big freeze - one year on

This time last year we were under several inches of snow and getting around was difficult.

We run our own on line retail business and sales were well up as people couldn't get out to shop. What they may not have appreciated is the on line retailer still had to get to their warehouse and get the goods out. We lease a small warehouse, north facing and very quickly the roads in the business park were like a skating rink. I remember on one occasion my car becoming completely stuck and had to get other people in the business park to spin it on the ice. An Post were great only one parcel failed to reach its destination on time for Christmas.

The children seemed to be at home permanently from school and college and couldn't get out at night. It was a crazy time but in many ways very pleasant as we all stayed in more.

Remember at the time, The Irish Times told you it was a form of man made Global Warming.

Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic?
Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But Conscience asks the question - is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;but one must take it simply because it is right. -MLK

It's hard to believe it's a year already. We had a great time here, built loads of snowmen and a structurally unsound igloo. Thankfully nobody had too much travelling to do.

It was bitterly cold today. There was a skiff of snow briefly here around lunch-time. It might not be far away!

Yes, it was bad, but if you think it was a massive natural disaster, you need a corrective - in fact, it was almost trivial in the big scheme of things.

In the 1947 freeze-up, the death rate in Dublin increased by a factor of two, and fuel was so scarce even the middle class was reduced to burning the furniture.

Irish Times Reader Offers - Irelands Arctic Siege

The Irish winter of 1947 was the coldest and longest of the 20th Century. From shortly after Christmas to almost Easter, the country was gripped by snow and ice; transport ground to a halt. The normal supply of goods and services was suspended.

Yet now that we are all prepared (well I am anyway), it probably won't happen again for 50 years or so.
