I remember the day before before because my car broke down in Limerick and I had to call a friend for a tow back to Clonmel, where we lived. No breakdown assist in those days, and it was a Sunday. As we arrived home it was just breezing up into what became the full blast of the hurricane that night.

My brother was in Skibbereen with his family, where they had a snack in a nice little coffee shop. He arrived home late and saw the same coffee shop on TV with the tables floating out the door.

I also remember the 1979 August freak storm that descended on the Fastnet yacht race (from Cowes, in the Isle of Wright, around the Fasnet and back). The Fastnet is one of the three big yacht races in the world - the others are Hobart-Sydney, and Bermuda - New York (?, I think). But this year, 15 people were drowned, only 86 boats finished from 303 starters.

Coincidentally, both Hurricane Charley and this freak storm came on much the same dates, 7 years apart.

The arc of sea from Cork around to the Bay of Biscay is one of the most treacherous in the world.

Funny, the west of Ireland is not a great snow place, unlike the rest, so I tend to recall storms, rain and wind more that snow - except for the winter of 1963, which had a long deep cold spell.

Hurricane Debbie (September, 1961) stripped most of the roofs in my home town - my memory is of looking out the window and watching big slates smashing on the main street. Apparently almost a dozen people died country-wide.

To hear some people, you would think bad weather only began in 2009!

Good. We don't want kids drowning. The Grand Canal was frozen in the last few big ...
